Before Getting Your Black Hair with Purple Tint

You can tint your hair black hair purple with a demi-permanent or semi-permanent dye. You would also need some items to prep your hair and take care of it afterward. We will list everything in detail below.

Demi-Permanent vs. Semi-Permanent

A demi-permanent dye works with an alkaline agent and a developer. It deposits a color, in this case, purple, on the surface of the hair but does not lighten the natural hair color.

In contrast, semi-permanent dye works without a developer. It does not change the hair color much and is more temporary in nature.

A demi-permanent purple hair dye can give your hair a uniform finish that lasts roughly 20 to 28 washes, while a semi-permanent purple hair dye will stay on for 3 to 6 washes.

Both demi- and semi-permanent hair dyes can be used to add a touch of purple to black hair.

What Purple Shade is Best for Black Hair?

Black hair goes well with dark, deep purples. For example, berry, plum, and sangria tints. But, when picking a shade, do not forget to take into account your skin tone. Your shade of choice should complement your skin tone.

Never Forget to Do a Patch Test

As with any other hair product, it is essential to do a patch test first. You should observe if any negative reactions, such as allergies, occur.

Steps to Take

  • Prep Your Hair

Wash your hair well for the days leading up to the dyeing. Be sure to use a shampoo that suits your hair and follow up with a conditioner.

Note: You should not wash your hair right before you dye your hair, as this can strip the natural oils from your hair.

  • Section Your Hair

In front of a mirror and with your hair clips within hand’s reach, part your hair into four portions. If you have a lot of hair, you can divide it into more portions. Just make sure to secure the portions well with the hair clips.

  • Prep the Dye

Now move on to the dye. Check the instructions on your product’s packaging and follow them word by word. Though each dye comes with its own manual, the general idea is to mix the colors in a given ratio. You can use a bowl or a similar container.

  • Apply the Dye to Your Hair

Once the dye is good to go, you can apply it to your hair. Spread it evenly throughout your head, but work section by section so you do not accidentally leave out a patch. It is not a bad idea to use several mirrors to check your hair from different sides.

  • Cover Your Coated Hair & Wait

Put on the shower cap that you have prepared. Then wait as instructed by your product. For accuracy, you should set a timer.

Note: The wait time varies from product to product, but normally, it would be between 20 and 30 minutes.

  • Rinse the Product

After  the time has elapsed,, you can go ahead and rinse the color off your hair. Regular water is fine. It is important that you do not use shampoo! Rinse it with just water, then follow up with a hydrating conditioner.

  • Dry Your Hair

Finally, leave your hair to dry. Air-drying is the best option. You should avoid using heat right away. If you want to style it with heat tools, however, make sure you do not forget to apply a heat protectant.

Two good heat protectants are:

After Tinting Your Black Hair with Purple

Use Color-Safe Hair Products Only

After tinting your black hair, it is important that you use color-safe hair products. This is applicable to shampoos, conditioners, sprays, gels, etc. Simply put, anything you put on your hair should have a color-protecting formula.

Do Not Wash Your Hair Too Much

If you have a habit of washing their hair everyday, you need to drop it instantly. Washing your hair frequently equates to washing the color off. You must shower less to keep the purple tint on your hair longer.

Use Lukewarm Water, Not Hot Water

Using lukewarm water is best to protect your hair color

When you wash your hair, avoid using hot water. Your hair expands when it comes in contact with hot water, and the cuticles of hair strands open up, paving way for water to enter insides of the hair and in doing so, wash out color.

Lukewarm water is the better option, especially if you are living somewhere cold. But if it is not too cold where you are, choose cold water over lukewarm water. Cold water can close up the cuticles of your hair and seal in the purple color.

Stay Away From the Sun & Sea

The sun can cause the purple in your hair to fade away. So say goodbye to basking under the rays for long hours each day. Whenever you step out of your home, shield your hair. You can also wear anti-UV sprays or brush on powders to minimize sun exposure.

For example:

  • COOLA Organic Sunscreen Mist with SPF 30 for the Scalp & Hair

  • Mineral Sunscreen Powder with SPF 30 (Brush On Block Type)

Seawater can dry out your hair and reduce its elasticity, causing it to become weak and so susceptible to discoloring. You should hold back on hitting the beach after tinting your black hair purple.

Conclusion

So, in order to get your black hair with purple tint, you just need to have some materials ready and follow the steps that we have outlined above. Choose a demi- or semi-permanent purple dye and start sprucing up your hair!
